At the foothills of Kithairona near Oinoi, in a pine-clad location, lies the Monastery of Saint Meletios (Hosios Meletios), one of the most important centres of asceticism during the Byzantine era. The history of the monastery is inextricably linked with the life and times of Saint Meletios the Younger, the reformer of asceticism in Greece. Around the central monastery, which was named after him, he founded at least twenty-two smaller monasteries, many of which survive abandoned to date. An Architectural Survey was prepared for the restoration of the floor of “Virgin Mary” (Panagitsa) Paralavrio (small church belonging to a monastery).
