The Byzantine church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Katholiki (Panagia Katholiki) is situated on the southwestern edge of Gastouni. The church belongs to the type of the two-column cross-in-square church and features an octagonal dome, a cross-vaulted narthex, and a tripartite apse. It was erected in 1278-1279, during a period when the region was under Frankish rule. The monument suffered significant damage during the 2008 earthquake and was subsequently deemed unsafe and unsuitable for use. Restoration works, combined with extensive archaeological investigations in both the interior and surrounding area, brought to light new evidence that contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of its history.

The restoration study also included a landscape design proposal for the surrounding area. This involved the improvement of the adjacent priest’s residence, the reconfiguration of outdoor surfaces, the installation of rainwater drainage systems, and the introduction of site-specific urban furniture, such as stone benches with wooden seating. Additional interventions included lighting design and planting, aiming to enhance both the functionality and the aesthetic integration of the monument within its setting. Following the completion of these works, the church was returned to public use for worship and has since been reintegrated into the cultural life of the city and the wider region, functioning as an important reference point for the history of Medieval Elis.
